LION II

What is LION II?

LION II is the flagship SFI-funded project that drives the research in DERI. The research plan aims to

  1. develop the tools and techniques for creating, managing and exploiting networks of knowledge;
  2. produce real-world networks of knowledge that provide maximum gains over the coming years for human, organisational and systems problem solving;
  3. validate our hypothesis;
  4. create standards

What are the UIMR contributions to LION II?

Networks of knowledge are not created in a vacuum, but inside a highly dynamic information infrastructure – the Web provides us with a living laboratory enabling us to validate our approaches and hypothesis, and to improve our ideas.

The UIMR focuses on techniques to harness the massive amounts of dynamically-produced, semi-structured data produced by online communities by discovering the structures, relationships and concepts within this information, providing a means for its reuse and an understanding of the dynamics underlying its production. These goals are described by 3 tasks.

  1. Development of techniques for the selection and combination of symbolic features in collaborative information spaces, enabling context-based retrieval and filtering of networked resources
  2. Analysis of the structures and behaviours within online communities in order to link topics emerging in different communities.
  3. The development of richer personalisation, filtering and recommendation techniques based on user preferences, constraints and context, content analysis, content semantics and collaborative and social relationships. Tasks 1 & 2 will provide extensive input to Task 3.
